CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Matt just about caught his wife’s murmured instruction to play along as she hugged him. She buried her face in his shoulder, and he just caught the muffled word, ‘Argument.’

‘Steady on, old thing, of course I forgive you.’ He wasn’t quite sure what he was to forgive Kitty for but guessed it must have something to do with whatever tale she had told the other two people at the table. Presumably she had made up a row to explain his absence.

‘It really was so silly of me to leave my medication in the pocket of my coat. I should have thought.’ Kitty sniffed as she looked up at him with limpid blue-grey eyes.

‘No harm done, darling. Least said, soonest mended.’ He kissed the top of her blonde head.

Clearly something had happened whilst he had been chasing his tail all over Nice trying to work out the meaning behind the figures in the matchbook.

‘I think, if you will all excuse me, I need to retire to my room to lie down. This business with Candace and Mr Fetherington has been horribly distressing.’ Mrs Delaware rose from her seat and, refusing Luciano’s offer to accompany her, departed from the ballroom.

‘I think I too shall turn in, as you English say.’ The comte bade them goodnight and followed Mrs Delaware.

Matt took one of the vacant seats as Kitty sat down again.

‘Phew, I think I need another drink, that was terribly dramatic,’ Kitty said. ‘I have been quite the actress this evening.’

Matt flagged down a waiter and ordered them each a nightcap of a small cognac. ‘I gather things kicked off while I was gone?’ Matt asked, keeping his voice low just in case anyone might be trying to eavesdrop on their conversation.

‘I’ll say. I’ve lots to tell you. How about you? Any luck at the bar?’ Kitty asked in the same low tone.

Matt shook his head. ‘No joy. Whatever those numbers in the matchbook mean, that wasn’t it.’

Kitty looked disappointed as she sipped her drink. ‘I know it was a long shot, but I had rather hoped we might have cracked it. It just seemed like a sign when we walked past there today.’

‘Me too. I have got lots to tell you though,’ Matt said, before taking a good sip of his cognac.

‘Then shall we finish these and get out of here?’ Kitty suggested. She finished her drink and collected her bag and her stole.

Once safely back in their room, Matt told her what had happened at the bar and about Roland Fetherington following him back to the hotel.

Kitty’s expression was grave as he finished his story. ‘Goodness, that makes sense now of what Candace told us just before you returned.’

She explained what Candace had said about Roland cutting short their date. She also told him what she had learned about the police visit to find Monsieur Lapin’s photographs of Federico at the casino.

‘And you say that Luciano suggested Eunice make nice with Roland, to try and dissuade Candace from marrying him?’ Matt paused from where he was taking off his cufflinks.
